چکیده
Foot drop is the inability to dorsiflex ankle (raise toes) due neuromuscular impairment, and this common condition can cause trips falls. Current treatments for chronic foot provide dorsiflexion support, but they either impede push off or are not suitable all patients. Powered ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) counteract without these drawbacks, heavy bulky have short battery life. To drawbacks of current powered AFO, we designed built an AFO by dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs), a type artificial muscle technology. This paper presents our design results benchtop testing. We found that DEA 49 % support necessary raise foot. Further, charging DEAs reduced effort would be required plantarflexion compared with passive behavior, operation could 7000 steps more in actual operation. promising approach building counteracts impeding plantarflexion, may prove useful other prosthesis designs.

An ankle-foot orthosis powered by artificial pneumatic muscles.
We developed a pneumatically powered orthosis for the human ankle joint. The orthosis consisted of a carbon fiber shell, hinge joint, and two artificial pneumatic muscles. One artificial pneumatic muscle provided plantar flexion torque and the second one provided dorsiflexion torque. Computer software adjusted air pressure in each artificial muscle independently so that artificial muscle force ...

Powered ankle-foot orthosis can not only prevent foot-drop and assist patients’ walking but also improve the ankle joint movement for patients with dysfunction caused by the various injuries and nervous system diseases. Common ankle rehabilitation devices limit the ankle injury patients’ rehabilitation training within fixed places, so a portable powered ankle-foot orthosis is presented in this ...
متن کاملAn improved powered ankle-foot orthosis using proportional myoelectric control.
We constructed a powered ankle-foot orthosis for human walking with a novel myoelectric controller. The orthosis included a carbon fiber and polypropylene shell, a metal hinge joint, and two artificial pneumatic muscles. Soleus electromyography (EMG) activated the artificial plantar flexor and inhibited the artificial dorsiflexor. Tibialis anterior EMG activated the artificial dorsiflexor. We c...
متن کاملA portable powered ankle-foot orthosis for rehabilitation.
Innovative technological advancements in the field of orthotics, such as portable powered orthotic systems, could create new treatment modalities to improve the functional out come of rehabilitation. In this article, we present a novel portable powered ankle-foot orthosis (PPAFO) to provide untethered assistance during gait. The PPAFO provides both plantar flexor and dorsiflexor torque assistan...
متن کاملActuation Timing Strategies for a Portable Powered Ankle Foot Orthosis
Ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) are used to assist persons with lower-limb neuromuscular impairments. We have developed the portable powered AFO (PPAFO). This device uses a bidirectional pneumatic actuator powered by a CO2 bottle to provide dorsiflexor and plantarflexor torque assistance. The PPAFO operates tether-free, allowing for use outside of the laboratory. This system has been tested on one i...
